Offering personal support in all life timing, decisions, questions and planning

astrologer@richardsky

Geeks Bearing Gifts

“I see today’s computer world as a nightmare honkytonk prison, noisy and colourful and wholly misbegotten. We must everywhere use ghastly menus designed by people with no sense of the human mind. We are imprisoned in applications that can be customized only in ways the designers alllow (in Unix, you had control, with access to the configuration files). We are in a Dark Ageof documents, most locked in imprisoning formats, canopic jars from which they can never escape, or mangled within by markup which hinders re-use, indexing, connection and overlay and overlap. This is a blighted parody of the computer dreams we had long ago; it’s like being stuck in a fast-food restaurant with all its supersized greaseburgers, posters, toys and mess, and pretending we’re in paradise.

But let us try to be optimistic. Who knows what may yet be possible? All the ideas have not yet been tried.

And what would you want now if there was a real choice?

Think about it.”

So ends Ted Nelson’s wonderful, pithy, insightful and scathing brief book about the inheritied digital landscape we currently (reluctantly) inhabit. This is worth reading if you have any curiosity at all about how it happened…. (facebook denizens may not care as their “walled garden” probably suffices).

http://www.amazon.com/Geeks-Bearing-Gifts-Ted-Nelson/dp/0578004380

RSA Animate - Crises of Capitalism (via theRSAorg)

Homage to this enigmatic cinematic master also @ http://fuckyeahstanleykubrick.tumblr.com/

At the risk of being labelled and adjudged a snobbish culture-vulture, I confess to being a Kubrick fan - although it’s hard to express the why of it…?? From Paths of Glory to Eyes Wide Shut, I’ve enjoyed each singularly unique piece.

Here’s a collection of essays and commentary, insightful and thought-provoking, on everything Kubrick

(especially timely today in light of Wordpress finally putting its hard-working Kubrick theme to rest…)

· Treat clients with respect and offer opinions with humility, giving them what they want, request, and are ready to hear - not what you think they need.

· Develop refined communication skills and deliver information in a straightforward manner devoid of jargon, cleverness, or vagueness.

· Distinguish clearly between applying the methods and concepts of astrology, and other forms of your practice such as therapy or counselling. In my mind they are not the one and the same thing.

· Remain up to date with the latest research, such as cutting-edge neuroscience and the most recent academic findings on human behaviour, if relying on psychological models in your practise. Simply leaning on conceptions that are decades old or were once fashionable, and possibly no longer entirely valid, is unlikely to be good enough.

· Recognise that the Tradition of astrology itself is full of perennial insights and practical wisdom pertaining to soul, psyche, character, and human nature.

The Son of Gutenberg | The Big Money

The Son of Gutenberg | The Big Money:

WordPress.com has become the 21st-century equivalent of Gutenberg’s printing press.

As the leading blogging software, WordPress is an essential tool in the transformation of media. WordPress.com hosts 11 million blogs pumping out the enthusiasms, opinions, and ideas of its authors to 256 million unique monthly users. Unlike social media giants Facebook and Twitter, WordPress doesn’t sport a multibillion-dollar valuation or a murderer’s row of VC investors. That’s because WordPress itself is open-source code that anyone with skill could make his or her own. (They just can’t call it WordPress.)

•	Appreciate that “cookbooks” are devoid of genuine value or significance, otherwise computers could do a better delineation than a human being. It is only the clear and consistent application of essential principles, concepts, and methods in every particular circumstance and for each unique person that can possibly account for the variety and chaos which life presents to us in every unfolding moment. That’s what makes astrology both wonderful and viable. So permanently erase foolish and simplistic notions of 10 planets x 12 signs x 12 houses x 8 aspects = instant astrology! The quest is for singular description, not broad generalisation.

•	Understand that charts are fundamentally meaningless without context.

Benjamin Dykes, Medieval Astrologer - Latest Translation - Persian Nativities II

Benjamin Dykes, Medieval Astrologer - Latest Translation - Persian Nativities II:
Here it is - hot from the presses of one of traditional astrology’s foremost translators. British and French libraries are not providing sufficient and representative free astrological materials: they have been confiscated and are barely accessible. There is an “alliance” between British mercantilism (which insists that everything must be paid for : see for example the Eebo unavailable corpus that even most of University libraries can not afford) and French obscurantism (which provides only anti-astrological secondary works). This alliance is hostile to the knowledge of astrology, and promotes negation of the importance of astrology in European cultural history, and possibly the falsification and rewriting of its history in favour of ideological dominant imperatives. These imperatives are first Christian, followed by the scientistic, and are prevailing for centuries (see my Manifesto).”

- Digital International Astrology Library, DIAL, FIRST SET : before 1400, by Patrice Guinard

Astrology.
